The ABCB is a Council of Australian Government (COAG) standards writing body that is responsible for the development of the National Construction Code (NCC), comprising the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA). The ABCB is a joint initiative of all three levels of government in Australia.
The role of Project Officer sits within the ABCB's National Construction Code Management and Product Certification team comprised of mainly industry skilled individuals from a diverse building and plumbing industry background including building, plumbing, building design, building certification and engineering.
The team has primary responsibility for the development and management of National Construction Code content. It also has responsibility for technical input into the development and maintenance of referenced building and plumbing standards, as well as the administration of the CodeMark and WaterMark product certification schemes.
This Project Officer role is an excellent opportunity to work at the forefront of nationally focused building regulatory reform in close collaboration with the regulatory community and the building industry. The successful applicant can expect to gain broad insight at a national level into the development of National Construction Code content, and to have meaningful input to the regulatory environment for the building sector. There is also the opportunity to engage with key industry groups and regulatory authorities, and participate as part of a diverse organisation that is working to ensure Australia has a competitive and productive building industry whose outputs meet the requirements of the National Construction Code.
What we're looking for
The successful candidate will ideally have a background and qualifications in building surveying/certification, but broader qualifications and/or experience in related areas of the building industry will be considered.
You will need to demonstrate broad knowledge of and experience in the application of the National Construction Code and its referenced documents. You will have excellent analytical, writing and presentation skills, and experience in the following areas will be highly regarded:
- project management
- stakeholder engagement
- the development of technical policy and guidelines
- the provision of technical advice to client groups or industry bodies.
This position is based in Canberra and may occasionally involve interstate travel.

The primary duties of the position are to assist with the delivery of technical projects in accordance with the ABCB's work program including National Construction Code amendments, and to provide technical advice on the National Construction Code and related matters.
The position reports to a Senior Project Officer, who in turn reports to a Director, NCC Management and Product Certification.
