Australian Science Policy Fellowship Program

About the program

The Australian Science Policy Fellowship Pilot Program gives scientists a pathway into policy making by providing an opportunity to work in a Commonwealth Government department for one year. It strengthens the diversity of expertise in the Australian Public Service workforce by providing a pathway for scientists to become skilled policy practitioners.

The program is targeted at early- and mid-career researchers with up to 15 years post-PhD experience.

The program offers a range of benefits to participants:

  • Policy officers receive on-the-job training in and exposure to policymaking. They will not be appointed as subject matter specialists, but rather will be expected to participate in the activities of existing teams in their host department.
  • Successful candidates will have access to professional development and mentoring provided by their host department.
  • Successful candidates will become part of an alumni network to be managed by the Office of the Chief Scientist.
  • At the end of the program, fellows will be well placed to compete for policy and program roles should they choose to stay in the Australian Public Service.

The pilot commenced in July 2018. In the 2018-19 program fellows are working in diverse policy fields, such as commercialisation policy in the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science; protecting the rights of older Australians in the Attorney General’s Department; and the Genomics Health Futures Mission at the Department of Health.

Policy officers in the 2019-20 program will be employed by a host department, commencing July 2019. Host departments include:

Please note that the host department role descriptions may be updated over the course of the application period. Final offers of fellowship placements and roles are at the discretion of the host department.
