The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division within the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement. NMI is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading national metrology institutes. Our 330 staff deliver cutting edge measurement services and research from unique facilities across Australia.
NMI’s Electricity Section undertakes advanced research and development that anticipates new measurement technologies and applications, collaborating both nationally and internationally in support of its objectives. The section develops, maintains and disseminates to industry Australia’s primary standards of electrical measurement. It delivers specialised calibration and other measurement services to a variety of clients, including commercial calibration laboratories and government organisations.

Our ideal candidate
NMI’s Electricity Section is looking to recruit an electrical engineer to its Impedance Group to develop new systems and services to meet emerging customer requirements, and to provide support for the provision of calibration services to industry.
The successful candidate will have:
- a deep theoretical understanding of the principles of electrical measurement coupled ideally with practical experience of precision electrical measurement
- experience in designing electrical and electronic devices using appropriate software
- an aptitude for mechanical design, with experience in mechanical design software an advantage
- a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team to deliver agreed technical and service delivery outcomes
- excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders
What you will do
As the successful candidate, you will:
- contribute to the development of new measurement systems and techniques in the area of impedance metrology
- contribute to the provision of calibration services for impedance quantities
- develop and maintain productive relationships with clients and external stakeholders
- become, in time, a recognised authority in Australia and internationally in one or more areas of impedance measurement.
The successful candidate will hold a tertiary qualification in electrical engineering, preferably at Ph.D. level.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.
This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
This recruitment process is being used to fill an ongoing APS Level 6 or Executive Level 1 position. Candidates will be engaged at the level commensurate with their skills and experience.
A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing APS Level 6 or Executive Level 1 vacancies should they become available within 12 months form the date advertised.
