About the team

The Data and Policy Design Branch resides within the Department’s Analysis and Insights Division. The Division is a high profile, dynamic group that supports the department and its Ministers to enable globally competitive industries. We undertake cutting edge analysis and economic research to determine what’s happening and what might happen in the economy. Our Branch works in collaboration with our colleagues across the department on a range of data issues. We provide data governance and data management advice, deliver data projects, provide analytical and reporting services, and drive national spatial data policy outcomes.

Our ideal candidate

We are seeking motivated, outcomes-focused candidates to fill one or more roles at the APS5 level. The successful candidate(s) will join a small team responsible for delivering a variety of projects within the Data and Policy Design Branch. 

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Very good organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to multiple projects in a busy work environment.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to input into a range of senior executive and ministerial briefings.
  • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work with and draw meaningful insights from data in a variety of formats, including data dashboards and/or geospatial data. Any relevant experience in data analytics, data science or geospatial analysis (including use of relevant software tools) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to identify and respond to relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns.
  • Relevant work experience and/or tertiary qualifications.

What you will do

Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • play a key role in delivering projects under the responsibility of the Data Branch
  • engage with relevant colleagues across the department to gain insights into their data use and capabilities, including training and/or analytical user groups and communities of practice
  • provide timely and expert advice to inform a range of ad-hoc requests for information about our department’s data use
  • maintain strong professional working relationships with a range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the department
  • support the Branch in providing quality advice, briefs and products to inform departmental and whole of government data policy matters.


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This process is being used to fill a range of vacant ongoing and non-ongoing positions at the APS5 level. Merit pools will be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies at these levels should they become available within 12 months from the date advertised.
