About the team
The Resources Strategy Branch provides policy advice to government on matters about the exploration, investment, management and development of Australia’s minerals and energy resources. The Branch is looking to fill multiple vacancies within its three teams: Cabinet and Resources Strategy; Environment and Resources Stewardship; and Market Intelligence.
The Cabinet and Resources Strategy team is responsible for tackling large, cross-cutting issues that impact the sector, as well as supporting the Minister and senior executive. The team maintains strong relationships with state and territory governments and key resources sector peak bodies.
The Resources Stewardship and Environment team is responsible for issues relating to social license of the sector, looking at ways to support and strengthen environmental, community and Indigenous engagement outcomes.
The Market Intelligence team is responsible for analysing new market opportunities and the barriers to pursuing new development. The team is leading the Government’s ambitious Strategic Basin Plan agenda – looking at ways to promote new gas development in areas of high potential.
Our ideal candidates
We are looking for high performing Policy Officers to join the Resources Strategy Branch and provide quality and timely advice to the Australian Government on the resources sector.
Positions will be filled across the APS Level 5 and APS Level 6 with your prior policy experience helping guide which level you apply for. APS 5 Policy Officers may have relatively new or limited policy background and will be able to work under limited direction. APS 6 Senior Policy Officers will have an extensive policy background and hands on experience.
Our ideal candidates will have:
- A proven ability to work as part of a team.
- Experience in problem solving, policy development and implementation of new policies.
- Strong relationship building skills along with experience in working and communicating with different types of stakeholders (across government, the private sector and communities).
- Ability to analyse and communicate advice, including briefing for Senior Executive staff and Minister.
- A capacity to work effectively and make sound decisions in a fast-paced work environment.
- An understanding or capacity to understand issues affecting the resources sector.
What you will do
As an APS 6 Senior Policy Officer, you will have a well-developed understanding of key issues affecting the resources sector, experience in development and implementation of new polices and will be able to work autonomously on tasks that are complex in nature. Candidates at this level will be able to demonstrate:
- Ability to build strong working relationships, with experience in working with stakeholders across Commonwealth, State or Territory Governments; Private Sector and communities.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills, with ability to produce quality work and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and solve problems, and will have opportunities to represent your team to discuss and negotiate on whole-of-government issues such as trade, climate change, the environment, skills, technology and policy relating to Indigenous Australians.
APS 5 Policy Officers will undertake moderate to complex tasks and have the ability to operate under limited direction. You will be able to communicate effectively to a range of internal and external stakeholders, have an understanding of key issues affecting the resources sector as well as the ability to interpret, draft and review policy.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Relevant tertiary qualifications are desirable.
A background in, or familiarity with, issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities would be highly regarded.
