About us

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is a corporate Commonwealth entity. ARENA’s main objective is to improve the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies and increase the supply of renewable energy in Australia. ARENA was established on 1 July 2012 under the Australian Renewable Energy Agency Act 2011 (the ARENA Act). ARENA supports the Government's Low Emissions Technology Statement in seeking to achieve global emissions reduction through technology innovation and commercialisation to the benefit of Australia.

ARENA complements other funding bodies and provides financial assistance to renewable energy (including enabling and hybrid technologies) for research, development, demonstration and deployment projects that improve the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies and increase the supply of renewable energy in Australia. The provision of knowledge sharing forms an important part of ARENA’s functions. ARENA operates under its own Act of Parliament, and the ARENA Board and CEO are responsible to the Minister for Energy.

Reporting to the General Manager, Project Delivery, the Projects Solutions Team is responsible for:

  • Managing complex contracts - projects delivered in compliance with funding agreements, risk managed proportionately
  • Leading engagement with Business, Development and Transactions team to ensure Board approved projects and competitive rounds:
    • have optimum project design taking into account key risks and key stakeholders
    • are supported by funding agreements that are clear and able to be efficiently managed
    • enable delivery of high quality knowledge sharing
    • will deliver to the program’s outcomes.
  • Delivering solutions to complex and resource intensive contracting issues with existing grant recipients, which may include project re-scoping, contract termination, contract negotiations and complex variations.
  • Coaching and mentoring staff to build a cohesive, high performing team
  • Contributing to portfolio reviews and portfolio management
  • Contributing to process and business improvement.

Building relationships with key internal stakeholders including the BD&T team, CMS and KS.

  • Minimal workflow issues between teams
  • Contract Management Services and Knowledge Sharing teams feel engaged through delivery of Project Solutions business
  • Constructive participation in internal working groups based on strong knowledge of pipeline projects and existing portfolio.

Delegations for approval of:

  • complex contracting decisions
  • program and/or project design
  • funding agreement design
  • project financing structures and design
  • Compliance with delegated approval framework.
  • Funding agreements are well designed and able to be managed efficiently and effectively.

Understanding of ARENA’s existing portfolio to provide advice and guidance on fit of new proposals against existing portfolio

  • Sound understanding of ARENA’s investment priorities, strategic objectives and existing project portfolio.

Contribution to project portfolio review committee and process improvement working group

  • Attendance and participation at portfolio review committee meetings
  • Attendance (or nominated representative from team to attend) process improvement working group. Project Solutions team to continue to consider process improvement in day to day business, to then feed into ongoing process improvements in the Branch.

A sound knowledge of the renewable energy sector is highly desirable to be successful in this role.

What you will do

The Manager of the Project Solutions team is responsible for managing a medium sized team that specialises in resolving complex contracting issues as they arise, and be the primary Project Delivery team representative on contract negotiations.

The Project Solutions team works closely with the other teams in the Project Delivery team, Contract Management Services and Knowledge Sharing, to ensure that where their business deliverables overlap or intersect, clear workflow and efficient processes are in place.

Of importance is external stakeholder management and ensuring the customer experience is unhindered by the handover of projects between teams.

The Director’ tasks include:

  • Day to day management of medium sized team including resource management and professional development of staff.
  • Building relationships with key internal stakeholders including the Business Development and Transactions team, Contract Management Services and Knowledge Sharing.
  • Delegations for approval of:
    • complex contracting decisions
    • program and/or project design
    • funding agreement design
    • project financing structures and design
  • Understanding of ARENA’s existing portfolio to provide advice and guidance on fit of new proposals against existing portfolio and project delivery risks
  • Contribution to portfolio review committee and process improvement working group

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
