About the branch

The Communications Branch sits within the Corporate and Digital Division and plays a key role in how the department tells its story and in supporting the department’s policy objectives. The branch manages a number of communications channels and offers advice on all aspects of communications. It plays a key role in supporting Ministers and the department’s Executive.

We are seeking candidates to join our strategic communications teams. The successful applicant will join a dynamic branch with a strong focus on:

  • strategic priorities
  • working closely and early with our policy and program colleagues
  • building strong communications capability across the department and
  • leading a content-focused, digital first approach to developing impactful communications.

Our work is diverse, reflecting the breadth of subject matters that fall under the Industry, Science, Energy and Resources portfolio. We work with our colleagues on topics like energy, climate change, space, science and commercialisation, industry growth, business support programs and resources.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate:

  • is a government communications specialist with a breadth of skills and experience
  • has experience in developing and implementing communication strategies
  • is a strong strategic thinker, able to consider projects holistically as well as how they might relate to other bodies of work
  • has highly-developed writing and editing skills
  • has a proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, including highly-developed stakeholder engagement skills
  • has strong judgement and is able to decide or recommend a course of action and escalate issues if required
  • is able to manage small teams
  • has knowledge of whole of government advertising processes and guidelines
  • has experience in developing and implementing large national communications and advertising campaigns, including managing a range of campaign suppliers, campaign budgets and campaign procurement requirements.

Tertiary qualifications in Communications (or a related field) or relevant work experience is highly desirable.

What you will do 

You will be part of strategic communication teams, providing communications support and advice to the department and ministerial offices. You will work with others in the branch and across the department to develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies.

Your role could include:

  • Developing web content, internal communications, publications and marketing material.
  • Managing and/or assisting with advertising campaigns.
  • Editorial services and content creation for the department and our Ministers.
  • Ensuring integrity through accuracy and consistency of messaging, responsiveness, timeliness and quality output.
  • Effectively engaging with program and client areas to encourage collaboration in the development of key messaging and external communications content.
  • Undertaking effective evaluation of communication activities against objectives for key initiatives and projects.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

This process is being used to fill immediate Executive Level 1 vacancies. A merit pool may be established and used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for 12 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette.  Non-ongoing offers will be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with possibility of extension.
