About the team

The Property, Security and Crisis Management Branch is a key enabler for the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER). The branch supports the department’s mission by providing staff with a safe, resilient and productive physical work environment.

The branch is responsible for:

  • the leases and maintenance of more than 60 properties across Australia
  • numerous minor construction projects
  • the physical, information and personnel security needs of the department
  • the provision of crisis and incident management response
  • COVID-19 coordination and response
  • Emergency Management compliance and business continuity.

This is an excellent opportunity to practically contribute to the department’s resilience to disruption. You will engage with all divisions assisting them to respond and maintain continuity of key business functions.

Our ideal candidate

We are seeking a talented professional to perform the role of EL1 Assistant Crisis Manager, Crisis Management, within DISER’s head office located in Industry House in Canberra.

The Assistant Crisis Manager will have the opportunity to shape DISER’s crisis response frameworks working as an integral part of the Chief Operating Officer’s Group. Reporting to the Crisis Manager, the Assistant Manager will:

  • lead a team of Crisis Response, Business Continuity & Emergency Management Officers
  • provide ongoing development and maintenance of the department’s Crisis, Business Continuity frameworks and compliance schedules
  • engage across all areas of the department and with other Commonwealth Agencies through the Australian Government Crisis Management arrangements.

What you will do

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading and coordinating crisis and major incident response actions.
  • Leading the preparation and management of strategic frameworks, including strategic plans, policies, systems, technologies and procedures, and their associated budgets. 
  • Leverage best practice processes and methodologies to enhance the maturity of DISER’s crisis response and business continuity frameworks.
  • Engage with divisions to identify, assess and document critical processes, as well as improving and reviewing business recovery plans (delivery of business continuity training and one-on-one assistance).
  • Developing briefs, risk assessments, assurance reports and analysis for the departmental Executive.
  • Provide specialist advice in the department’s response planning across its National portfolio.
  • Government Crisis Response and Recovery committees.
  • Undertaking lessons learnt exercises and engaging in continuous improvement to build departmental resilience.

In addition to the above, the candidate will be able to:

  • Perform in times of uncertainty and under high levels of pressure.
  • Communicate clearly and with influence across a wide audience.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and sound judgement in an environment of complex and competing priorities with a strong work ethic; flexible can-do attitude; outcome-focused; and deadline driven approach.

Desirable attributes are

  • Experience and/or qualifications in Crisis and Business Continuity Management with a focus on staff safety.
  • Management skills and experience in dealing with complex issues during a business interruption or emergency event.
  • Experience in Organisational Risk Management.


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

This positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This process is being used to fill an immediate 12-month non-ongoing Executive Level 1 vacancy. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing EL1 vacancies.
