Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre

Questacon is a specialised division of the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER). Delivering interactive learning programs and experiences to engage and inspire millions of Australians. We operate the National Science and Technology Centre and Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre in Canberra. We also deliver travelling programs, exhibitions and online content. Through these programs, we work to provide experiences for all Australian’s including those in remote and regional areas. We work alongside a range of internal and external stakeholders to deliver our programs. These stakeholders include:

  • other science centres and museums
  • libraries
  • universities
  • science and research organisations
  • industry bodies
  • business
  • schools
  • community-based organisations
  • with First Nations elders and communities

Questacon’s Science and Learning branch is one of two executive branches within Questacon. Our core functions include the creation of new and innovative science and technology experiences. These include exhibitions, interactive learning experiences, public programs and digital activities. We also support existing audiences including young people, teachers and parents. Piloting initiatives to engage new and under-served audiences. To boost regional and remote STEM capacity through community-based skills sharing and connections. Ensuring all activities are monitored and evaluated for ongoing improvement. Working in partnership with other organisations to address emerging challenges and opportunities in STEM engagement and education. Including increasing the diversity and inclusivity of our programs.

We are seeking expressions of interest from experienced and talented professionals at the EL2 level. With the proven ability or strong potential to lead key functions within our Science and Learning branch. We have opportunities for the right people to join our leadership team. With ongoing and non-ongoing opportunities available. These roles will provide a range of tasks including:

  • new and existing program delivery
  • the creation of exciting new content for communication across multiple channels including:
    • exhibitions
    • public programming
    • digital media
  • the delivery of strategic STEM and partnership initiatives within Questacon, across Australia and internationally.

We are looking for energetic, highly capable STEM education professionals who are experienced leaders. Committed to helping the Australian community access STEM learning experiences wherever they are. The successful candidates will have a combination of skills and expertise including:

  • High levels of personal interest relevant to Questacon’s work. With creativity and curiosity and practical professional expertise. Fields relevant to the roles include:

  • Experience in the delivery of interactive learning experiences. Using multiple channels and platforms including digital, face to face, hands-on and/or hybrid modes.
  • The ability to guide, manage and lead high-performing, multidisciplinary teams. Driving the delivery of multifaceted bodies of work that respond to our vision and mission.
  • Great strategic thinking, collaboration and co-design skills. Working with other leaders to develop and refine key organisational strategies and initiatives.
  • Resilience and adaptability in a changing environment. Demonstrating an ability to respond to changing priorities and timeframes, managing competing deadlines.
  • The ability to help drive change, in priority areas including improving financial and environmental sustainability. Boosting diversity and inclusion within our workplace and across our activities.
  • Good business and fundraising acumen, with experience in building and maintaining relationships with of internal and external stakeholders at all levels. With experience working with external funding and knowledge partners and other networks.
  • Ability to travel, including to regional and remote locations. To support the delivery of Questacon priorities, programs and partnerships in the community.
  • Strong awareness and connections in Australian STEM engagement and education networks. With the ability to speak with authority and influence in state, national and international contexts.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuing learning, for yourself and others.
  • Be adaptable to changing priorities and opportunities, taking on new roles and responsibilities according to the needs of the organisation over time, and to emerging opportunities generated through incoming knowledge, financial and policy partnerships.

What you will do

  • Support Questacon’s staff, General Managers and Director (Head of Division) to deliver high quality outcomes for the department and the Australian community.
  • Create, manage and lead STEM initiatives. Drawing on your experience, creativity and strong people and program management expertise.
  • Draw on your operational knowledge and strategic thinking capabilities. Provide sound advice and leadership on a range of issues. Lead the exploration, planning and implementation of business priorities.
  • Build and maintain trusted, open and effective working relationships with stakeholders including;
    • colleagues,
    • funding and knowledge partners,
    • other science and learning organisations and
    • external providers.
  • Develop, manage, lead, motivate and inspire diverse teams including:
    • building and modelling an inclusive, safe and engaging workplace culture,
    • providing clear and consistent communication,
    • setting and meeting required performance and behavioural standards,
    • delegating responsibility appropriately and
    • guiding and developing staff.
  • Communicate complex information and high level strategies that engage, motivate and influence senior leaders and stakeholders. Translate outlines and concepts into operational goals and work programs.
  • Represent Questacon and the department with authority at stakeholder events.  Including Questacon Centre activities, program activities, STEM sector network meetings. Host visits with dignitaries and prospective funding partners.
  • Prepare a wide range of communication material for consideration by the Questacon Executive and Government including:
    • public talks and presentations,
    • promotional pitches,
    • partnership funding bids,
    • social media content,
    • reports and discussion papers,
    • Ministerial and Agency Briefs and Cabinet and Senate Estimates Submissions, and
    • assist where applicable in the preparation of:
      • budget costings,
      • new policy proposals and
      • financial submissions.


To be eligible for these vacancies, applicants must: 

  • be an Australian Citizen;
  • undergo pre-employment checks, including a police records check;
  • obtain and maintain a valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and equivalent registrations in others states and territories as required to support our activities in the field;
  • be fully vaccinated through treatment with a vaccine (including approved booster doses as required) for COVID-19 as activities associated with this role may require the successful applicant to work with children who are unable to be vaccinated. Therefore, the person in this role, consistent with the DISER COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.
  • hold or be willing and able to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance conducted by the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). Applicants for a security clearance must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information to fulfil this process, covering a minimum of 5 years of employment, education, residential, financial, criminal history and anything else specified by the AGSVA;  
  • be willing to meet and uphold the requirements of working within the Australian Public Service, including the APS Code of Conduct and Employment Values

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes on the process

This recruitment process is being used to fill current and future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies. A merit pool of suitable applicants will be created which may be used to fill future vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months. Non-ongoing vacancies will be offered for a period of up to 18 months with the possibility of extension (up to a total period of 3 years). Some of these non-ongoing vacancies may become ongoing in the next 18 months. Should a position become ongoing then the merit pool established through this selection process may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis.

Positions are expected to be Canberra based and relocation assistance may be available.
