About the team

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments. It is a standards writing body responsible for the development of the National Construction Code (NCC), comprising the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA).

The positions are within the NCC Projects and Analysis team. The team manage research projects and undertake impact analysis on potential changes to the NCC.

Our ideal candidate

With a focus on the technical development of the NCC, our ideal candidates will have tertiary qualifications in at least one of the following:

  • engineering
  • building surveying
  • a related discipline such as building or architecture

Sound knowledge of the BCA and broad experience in its application (e.g. as a project architect, project engineer or building surveyor/certifier) will be highly regarded.

The positions would suit someone who likes to be challenged on nationally significant projects, is a strong and clear communicator, is results driven and delivers high quality outputs within a team environment.  Our ideal candidates will have strong project management, research and analysis skills and the ability to communicate technical matters clearly verbally and in writing.

What you will do

As a Senior Project Officer (EL1) you will manage the delivery of projects and achieve outcomes in accordance with the ABCB’s work program. You will:

  • manage the development of clear NCC provisions, supporting material and technical standards
  • manage the delivery of technical projects with limited direction
  • undertake and direct technical research and analysis
  • develop concise research reports and technical papers
  • manage project working groups
  • represent the ABCB on external technical committees such as Standards Australia’s Standards Committees

As a Project Officer (APS6) you will deliver projects in accordance with the ABCB’s work program. You will:

  • manage the development of clear NCC provisions, supporting material and technical standards
  • undertake and direct technical research and analysis
  • deliver technical projects with limited direction
  • develop concise research reports and technical papers

All Officers within the ABCB are also required to:

  • engage with stakeholders including the ABCB’s national technical advisory committees, government and industry
  • work on the NCC amendment process, including co‑ordination of public consultation processes
  • provide input and advice to colleagues regarding projects and technical matters
  • respond to technical enquiries.

Current projects being undertaken by the team cover:

  • building resilience,
  • condensation management,
  • energy efficiency,
  • external envelope combustibility and weatherproofing,
  • structural and fire safety,
  • accessibility, and
  • the quantification of the NCC’s Performance Requirements


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This job is being used to fill an immediate vacancy. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing or non-ongoing APS6 or EL1 vacancies should they become available within 18 months from the date of advertising.
