About the team

The Corporate and Digital Division of DISER provides a range of enabling services and operations delivery to the department.

The Application Management and Support (AM&S) section maintains, supports, and administers many diverse business systems that enable teams across the department to do their work. The section manages most of these systems from implementation through to ongoing maintenance and support and work closely with third party providers, vendors, business areas and other sections within the CIO Group.

Key functions include:

  • Implementing and supporting key applications for the department and provide ongoing maintenance and support
  • Ongoing administration of application systems

Services include break/fix support, patching, upgrades, monitoring, user administration and training for new technical staff and new users.

Our ideal candidate

Key requirements for the technical lead position include:

  • Background in software development (.Net) with sound understanding of ICT concepts and processes including testing and system analysis
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft SQL server, server administration tasks and VBA
  • Experience with PowerShell, including writing and debugging batch files
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure is desirable
  • Ability to understand specifications and modify HTML, CSS, and JavaScript according to WCAG requirements
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies, providing support and coaching others to build their capability
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and awareness of core processes and best practices used in service support
  • Good understanding of contemporary ICT delivery approaches and technologies – such as agile, DevOps, human-centred design, and cloud
  • Highly effective communication, representational and negotiation skills
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving skills including the ability to identify priorities and risks
  • Enthusiasm for being a part of a high performance, multi-functional team with the ability to adapt to different working environments

What you will do

Key responsibilities of the position include:


  • Identify & resolve technical issues
  • Assist across the AM&S section as required
  • Work closely with other developers to maintain and upgrade existing systems
  • Assist in developing and maintaining relevant documentation
  • Assist in monitoring and gathering of business requirements and plan for system improvements
  • Undertake technical research and identify development improvement opportunities
  • Work with other technical leads to develop best practice techniques, standards and reusable components
  • Provide technical and development advice to management and stakeholders
  • Participate in the testing and reviews of software releases
  • Assist with capability building through knowledge sharing and mentoring others
  • Identifying process improvement in day to day activities and responsibilities of the team
  • Work in a collaborative manner as a member of a team and assist implementing change
  • Work effectively with contracted service providers to ensure quality outcomes and contract deliverables are achieved
  • Building effective relationships and negotiating outcomes with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contributing to driving service delivery strategies and future directions


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This process is being used to fill an immediate Ongoing APS Level 6 vacancy. A merit pool may be established to fill future Ongoing and Non-Ongoing APS Level 6 vacancies.

This role is based in Canberra, however remote working arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
