The Department of Industry, Science and Resources supports economic recovery, productivity and growth, and job creation for all Australians by supporting manufacturing, business capability, technology, science and innovation. We also have an important role in positioning Australia to recover from the ongoing economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and helping businesses and industry respond to a shifting global environment.

We are looking for an established and inspiring leader to join our department as Chief Operating Officer (COO). As the COO, you will:

  • Lead the department’s Corporate Division which incorporates our human resources, property, security, legal and communications functions.
  • Be the department’s Chief Security Officer, with responsibility for the oversight of security arrangements, including governance, information, personnel and physical security.
  • Promote the leadership and partnership role of the department across government.
  • Play a critical role in contributing to the strategic direction of the department, and in achieving the objectives of the Australian government.

As a key leader and representative of the department, your political nous and ability to navigate ambiguity and uncertainty are cornerstones of success for this role. Anticipating stakeholders’ needs and engaging stakeholders on sensitive issues in order to share or seek information and/or to advocate a particular position is a key feature of this role. 

Our ideal candidates will have a proven knowledge and understanding of the Government’s agenda in relation to economic capacity and capability. You will have excellent knowledge and understanding of the department’s policy and program objectives, as well as a solid background in policy, program and/or corporate areas at senior levels. High level leadership capability (including intellectual leadership) and superior people management skills will be critical to your success.
